Four graphic design majors from the University of Bridgeport have been named among the top 10 winners in the 48-Hour Repack Challenge, an adrenaline-fueled competition that gives entrants from across the U.S. exactly two days to create, build, film and pitch souped-up packaging products for well-known household products.
Team members Terrell Griffith, Joe Giampaoli, Mike Christiano and Tijan Sallahike from UB’s Shintaro Akatsu School of Design (SASD) grabbed judges’ attention by overhauling traditional packaging for Band-Aids. Their innovative design, which focused on ease of use, enables consumers to unwrap and put on an adhesive bandage with just one hand.
With prizes ranging from $3000 to $1000 and some 34 corporate sponsors, including the likes of Coca-Cola, the 48-Hour Repack Challenge this year attracted more than 250 student competitors submitted 59 entries.
Judges included packaging and design professionals from Campbell Soup Company, SPANX, Walmart Stores Inc., and Kids II, Inc.
The challenge was organized by the Institute of Packaging Professionals Southeast Chapter, and finalists’ submissions were displayed during NextPack Summit, its packaging industry conference that’s held annually in Atlanta.
“We try to make this a platform for students to showcase their work and rub elbows with their peers and future colleagues in the industry,” said Ines Kuhn, one of the organizers. “The Repack Challenge student competition is the highlight of the conference. Everyone loves it. They love what the kids come up with in just 48 hours.”
The Challenge was originally held February 6-8, in the middle of one of this winter’s massive snow storms. SASD students spent most of the weekend at the school’s design studios, conceiving of ideas, creating prototypes, a videotapes presentation and sketches, all of which were required to be uploaded and submitted within 48 hours. As the blizzard raged outside, they stayed up until 3 a.m., stopping to get a few hours rest, before waking up early to finish their work.
Finalists and winners were announced in April.
“This is first year we’ve had graphic designers participate in the competition and they did so out of their own initiative. I’m really proud of their accomplishment,” said Emily Larned, who is chair of the graphic design program at SASD.
