More than 2,000 alumni returned to the University of Bridgeport on October 6-8 for 2017 Homecoming, a record number for the annual three-day extravaganza.

“All we can say is, ‘Wow!’ We know our alumni are especially proud, but this weekend was bigger and better than ever,” said Vice President for University Relations Robert Cottle. “We’ve already received calls asking about the 2018 Homecoming. It’s wonderful to see alumni excited and proud of their alma mater.”

Alumni representing the Class of 1951 up to the Class of 2017 reminisced, ran in the Purple Knight 5K run at Seaside Park, squared off during the alumni soccer match—and took lots of selfies.  They also marveled at the transformation of the campus during a special Historic Homes Tour within the Marina Park District that was led by two Alumni Board members.

After visiting recently restored campus buildings, the tour stopped at the former Victorian estate of industrialist William Grippin. Thanks to a recently announced $2.3 million gift from Mr. and Mrs. George Bauer, the building will reopen in 2018 to house the University’s new Innovation Center. It will be called Bauer Hall.

On Saturday evening, the University hosted its inaugural UB Awards gala to recognize its impressive and impactful alumni. Members of the 1990-1991 and 1991-1992 men’s basketball team, Ivana Kovacevic-Jurasin ’09, and gymnast Monica Mesalles-Nassi ’13 were inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame.

The University also awarded a Fran Bacon Lifetime Achievement & Coaching Award to Jesse Braverman ’73. Howard ’59 and Maxine Abner ’62, longtime supporters of the University and its athletes, received the Purple Knight Shield of Merit Award. UB Trustee Barbara James ’74, managing director at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited and a steadfast friend to the University, and Dusan Bogunovic ’04, assistant professor of microbiology at the Icahn School of Medicine in New York, received Distinguished Alumni Awards. An Honorary Alumnus Award was awarded posthumously to former Coach Bruce Webster.

“This is a much-anticipated weekend for our alumni and their families,” said Executive Director of Alumni and Family Engagement Aimee Marcella. “We’re also thrilled to welcome them back. UB will always be their home.”
