The University of Bridgeport School of Education announced today that it has established a memorial scholarship in honor of alumna Lauren Gabrielle Rousseau ’05, who too briefly inspired children as a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.

Ms. Rousseau was among 26 victims killed by a gunman at the school on December 14, 2012.

The $1000 scholarship will be awarded to an applicant seeking certification in elementary education, and will be distributed over two semesters in two $500 awards.

Recipients may use the scholarship for tuition, books, or living expenses.

“Lauren was a highly motivated, passionate, strong individual with a desire to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of young children through her teaching. The scholarship applicant should demonstrate the same significant character traits,” said Lori Noto, a professor at the School of Education at UB, where Ms. Rousseau earned her MS in Elementary Education.

Individuals wishing to contribute to the scholarship may send donations payable to the University of Bridgeport, Lauren Rousseau Memorial Scholarship, c/o Mary-Jane Foster, Vice-President University Relations, 126 Park Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06604. They may also donate online at
