For the fifth spring in six years, University of Bridgeport singers entered a world-class music hall at the invitation of Manhattan Concert Productions (MCP), joining a 100-voice chorus to perform Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Mass in Time of War” at Carnegie Hall. Under the baton of renowned conductor and educator Dr. Jerry Blackstone of the University of Michigan, Professor Frank Martignetti, eight UB students, one alumna, and one family member joined collegiate and community singers from Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, and Michigan. The concert took place on June 4th.

Forming the Masterworks Festival Chorus, all participants agreed to commit to this experience, learn the entire piece mostly on their own with a few rehearsals under Professor Martignetti’s direction, and submit a rehearsal recording to MCP before selection. From UB, they included:

  • Frank Martignetti, Director of Music & Performing Arts
  • Hitoka Sato ’17, B.M. Music
  • Annais Siera, former UB biology student
  • Madeleine Kean ’20, B.M. Music
  • Katrell Thompson-Nicky ’18, B.M. Music
  • Josh Bustamonte ’20, B.M. Music
  • Raquel Bustamonte, high school senior and sister of Josh
  • Dinesh Baral ’18, M.S. Engineering
  • Isaiah Wilson ’17, B.M. Music
  • Jackie Sadowsky ’16, B.M. Music
  • Alitha Krolikowski ’19, B.M. Music

As in the past, performing in the world’s most renowned concert hall with a professional orchestra and soloists is a transformative experience for students. Said Martignetti, “Jerry Blackstone is one of the finest conductors alive today. It was an honor and a privilege to perform under his direction and alongside UB students, and a joy to watch them transform into professional vocalists in front of a live audience.”
