University of Bridgeport invites the community to lend a hand during Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 16, when students and faculty will honor the former civil rights leader by volunteering at area nonprofits.
Free lunch and transportation to service sites will be provided.
Service projects will run from 9:30 to 12:30 p.m. at various locations including:
- The University of Bridgeport
- Discovery Museum,
- Caroline House,
- St. Mark’s Daycare,
- Harborview Towers,
- Alpha Community Services,
- Let’s Get Ready!, a college- and SAT test preparation center for underserved high school students
The day concludes with a luncheon presentation by Rwandan genocide survivor founder and CEO of the Daniel Trust Foundation. The U.S.-based nonprofit supports students from low-income communities with their educational and career needs and honors teachers who are making a difference in the lives of their students and communities in which they teach.
At 9:30 a.m., Sen. Chris Murphy will address volunteers at the Cox Student Center.
Same-day registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the John J. Cox Student Center, 244 University Avenue, Bridgeport, followed by a 9 a.m. ceremony.
