For the fourth consecutive year, the University of Bridgeport and Fairfield University women’s soccer teams will co-host the annual Diana Silonova Fundraiser Exhibition Game on Friday, April 20 on behalf of their former player who was critically injured in a car accident in 2009.
The game begins at 7:30 p.m. at Knights Field, 125 University Avenue, on the UB campus.
Local businesses and restaurant have generously donated items for a silent auction that will take place throughout the game. Some of the auction items include gift certificates from Two Boots, Murphy’s Law, Brennan’s Shebeen, Café Funchal, The Field, and Sodhexo Dining Services.
Prizes for the halftime auction include a Bolton Wanderers jersey signed by Fabrice Muamba and a signed Rangers Football Club shirt.
Diana Silonova played soccer for UB while she was an undergraduate, and later, for Fairfield University while earning a master’s in psychology. She was paralyzed from the chest down on January 14, 2009 after she lost control of the car she was driving and was thrown from and pinned under the automobile.
All proceeds from the exhibition match and auction will help pay for her ongoing medical expenses.
“We’re hoping everyone will come out to make this a fun event and fill the stands,” said UB Head Coach Magnus Nilerud. “When the two teams will kick off against each other, it always proves to be a great game with tremendous atmosphere.”
Tickets can be purchased from Nilerud at email@example.com, from Fairfield University Head Coach Jim O’Brien at firstname.lastname@example.org, or at the game.
