International Week: cultural events and exploration for all

The University of Bridgeport warmly invites the community to learn how to salsa, celebrate the arrival of spring at an Indian Holi festival, make African beads, and engage in a world of fascinating cultural events during the 41st annual International Festival, starting Monday, April 3 through Saturday, April 8, 2017.

All events are free to the public unless noted. 

International Week activities are hosted at various locations on the UB campus, 126 Park Avenue, Bridgeport. Parking is available.

The festival kicks off with celebrations of North American culture on Monday then progresses throughout the week to showcase cultures of South America on Tuesday, Africa on Wednesday, Europe on Thursday, and Asia on Friday. Events include:

Monday, April 3

“A Life in Service”: Peace Corps Panel

Time: 12:20 p.m. – 1:20 p.m. Location: Carlson Hall, Room 214

Hear from a panel of returned Peace Corps Volunteers about their service abroad and how it influenced what they are doing today. Pizza will be served!

Dance Workshop: Caribbean Dance

Time: 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Location: Mirror Room, Arnold Bernhard Arts and Humanities Center

Kick off International Festival Week on our first continent: North America! Come learn a few moves from the islands of the Caribbean, where music and dance have evolved with influences from Africa, Latin America, and beyond.

 Tuesday, April 4

Getting to Know South America – A Foreign Language Lecture & Study Abroad Fair

Time: 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Location: Discovery Pavilion, Wahlstrom Library

UB’s own Miguel Arroyo and Brandon LaFavor will introduce you to South America’s geography, economics, and culture–in Spanish! (Headphones will be available with English translation.)

Dance Workshop: Latin/Salsa

Time: 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Location: Mirror Room, Arnold Bernhard Arts and Humanities Center

Participants will learn some steps of Latin salsa dance from UB’s award-winning Ballroom Dancing Team!

Waist Bead Workshop

Date: Wednesday, April 5, 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Location: Lobby, John J. Cox Student Center

In this special workshop hosted by the UB African Student Association, you will learn to make your own set of Waist Beads, which have been worn by women in Northern and Western Africa for centuries and are steeped in tradition.

Pi Sigma Alpha Colloquium: The Role of Media in Conflict Resolution

Time: 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Location: duPont Tower Room, Arnold Bernhard Arts and Humanities Center

Sigma Alpha honor society presents “The Role of Media in Conflict Resolution,” a colloquium of experts, including a guest from the United Nations, leading an engaging discussion of current global conflicts and the role of media in seeking resolutions.

Dance Workshop: African Beats

Time: 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Location: Mirror Room, Arnold Bernhard Arts and Humanities Center

AfroVybz dancers of UB’s African Student Association take us on a journey throughout the vast African continent to showcase highlights of dance that span cultures and generations.

Holi Festival Celebration

Time: 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Location: People’s Park (outside the John J. Cox Student Center)

Celebrate the arrival of spring with a festival of colors as we highlight Asia as our final continent of the week! Holi is a traditional event in India and Nepal, commonly called the festival of colors or festival of sharing love.  It is a celebration of the coming of spring where participants play, chase and color each other with dry powder.

International Festival Celebration

Time: 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. Location: Arnold Bernhard Arts and Humanities Center

Tickets: Free for children under 12, $3 for students, $5 for UB faculty/staff, $7 for guests.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Ground Floor of the Wahlstrom Library, room no. 133. 

UB students and staff from over 80 different countries share and celebrate their culture. Enjoy food from around the world, cultural performances, flag raising, and tabletop displays. Please note: Food, activities, and cultural displays begin at 5 p.m. Performances begin at 7 p.m.
