A celebration of the life of longtime University of Bridgeport (UB) men’s soccer and baseball coach Fran Bacon will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 1 at the Mt. View Lutheran Church in Phoenix, Arizona, the UB Athletics Department announced today.
Bacon, who passed away after a lengthy illness at the age of 80 over Thanksgiving weekend, 2012, worked on the sidelines as the head coach of the Bridgeport men’s soccer program for 18 seasons from 1969 through 1986. Under his leadership, the team made ten NCAA championship appearances while amassing a school-record 169 career wins.
He also served as head baseball coach for the Purple Knights from the 1970 season through the 1987 campaign.
In 2011, the University honored his contributions to its athletics program with the creation of the Fran Bacon Award for Lifetime Achievement in Coaching, which is given out at the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Vito Montelli, head boys’ basketball coach at Saint Joseph’s High School in Trumbull, CT, received the inaugural Fran Bacon Award last year.
