Jam-packed weekend of fun includes fun run, harvest fair, concert
The University of Bridgeport will celebrate its annual homecoming from October 14-16.
Hundreds of alumni are expected to return to campus to participate in events that include a engineering carnival, Purple Knight 5K run, alumni soccer matches, academic open houses, veteran’s lunch, and a special jazz concert that is open to the community.
“This is such a great weekend for our alumni and their families. Besides seeing old friends and meeting current students, there is so much to do and see, from UB’s newest residential hall to the new nursing program facilities,” said Alumni Association President Dennis Brotherton ’86. “We’re also thrilled to honor several alumni at the Athletics Hall of Fame Induction ceremony, which is being held on Saturday.”
Alumni can register online or on campus at the Cox Student Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The weekend kicks off with a 6 p.m. pep rally on Friday, October 14 at the pocket park adjacent to Marina Dining Hall.
Children and young-at-heart are invited to participate in games and mix and mingle with current students at the Harvest Festival or run in the Purple Knight 5K. All proceeds from the run support the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.
The weekend concludes with a special concert by alumni musicians honoring Neil Slater, a former member of the UB music faculty and founder of the University’s jazz program.
The concert, free to all, begins at 1 p.m. Sunday. It will be held at the Littlefield Recital Hall at the Arnold Bernhard Center, 84 Iranistan Avenue.
Said Interim Director of Music and Performing Arts Frank Martignetti, “We’re so pleased to welcome Neil Slater back to campus. In the 1970s, he broke ground as he began one of the first jazz programs in the country, right here at UB; He is a giant in his field, and today our progressive music program continues the tradition of innovation that he began. Anyone who loves music will want to come hear 30 of Neil’s former students playing great big band arrangements in his honor.”
